Introduction

Typically, themeit is used as a tool to kick-start a brand new coding Task with no prior coding in place. Normally, the Codeframe in place will be empty - i.e. it will contain no existing codes. In this case, themeit will:

  1. Extract themes from your verbatims and autogenerate a Codeframe
  2. Autocode your verbatims against this Codeframe

However, sometimes you may want to skip step 1 because you already have an existing Codeframe that you want to use. The steps below describe how to achieve this within themeit.

Prerequisites

There are two conditions that apply when using this feature:

  • The existing codeframe must be non-empty (i.e. it must contain at least one code)
  • You can use a Shared Codeframe, however, all other Tasks sharing this Codeframe should be uncoded.
If the Codeframe is connected to coded task(s) you will be directed to use the codeit Machine Learning instead.
This is because the Machine Learning is a more effective technique because it leverages the coded examples connected to the Codeframe

Steps

To run themeit against a Task with an existing Codeframe, follow these steps:

  1. For file import projects, import your coding file
  2. If necessary, import the Codeframe into your project
  3. For data linked projects, link to the survey on your data collection platform. While using the Link Data Wizard be sure to assign the Codeframe to your Task
  4. For file import projects, use the Add Tasks tool to create your Task and attach your Codeframe
  5. Click the "Start" button on the Project Dashboard
  6. Click the "Analyse Themes" option
  7. Click the "Use Existing Codeframe" button

Will my Codeframe be altered by the process?

If your Task has an existing Codeframe that meets the Prerequisites above, then you will see this display within the Start Menu:

As this message explains, your Codeframe will not be changed by the process. The process will be limited to autocoding your verbatims only and the Codeframe will not be altered in any way.
